A normal liquid crystal cell can be used as a display only with a polarizing plate interposed, but the polarizing plate causes a loss of light quantity. PDLC is very advantageous in this point because it can be applied without using a polarizing plate. However, the intensity of transmitted light does not differ depending on whether or not an electric field is applied, but only the degree of scattering of transmission is different. Therefore, special handling is required to display light and dark as a display.
In addition, PDLC is expected to be able to be used as a device without using a glass substrate because of its structure in which liquid crystal is wrapped in a polymer. In other words, flexible device applications such as displays that do not require a solid container can be considered.
In connection with this, there is also a substance actively studied as a liquid crystal / polymer composite film.
