Smectic Liquid Crystals

Its structure is composed of liquid crystal rod molecules gathered together to form a layer by layer structure. The direction of the long axis of the molecules in each layer is parallel to each other, and the direction of the long axis is vertical or inclined to the plane of each layer.

Rod like molecules are parallel to each other to form a layered structure by the interaction perpendicular to the long axis provided by the functional groups, and the long axis of the molecules is perpendicular to the layer. Molecules can move in layers, not between layers. Its structure is very similar to that of crystal.
