The material world is colourful, with hundreds of thousands of compounds of established composition ranging from the most primitive (gold, wood, water, fire, earth) to modern (as of December 12, 2013). New compounds were found.
The number of known compounds is not consistent in all aspects. More generally recognized is the statistics of the editorial department of Chemical Abstracts of the United States: It has been found that there are more than three million kinds of naturally occurring compounds and synthetic compounds. Some of these compounds are composed of two elements, some are composed of three, four or even more chemical elements. There are still more than 300,000 newly synthesized compounds each year, of which more than 90% are organic compounds.
